I first made paper beads when i was very young and i enjoyed it very much. So it kinda came naturally to me when i tried it again. I had fun just as i did when i was a litttle girl.
Now let’s see what you will need:
Paper (newspaper or magazine for more colorful results)
I didn’t have any string so I simply used the elastic that I cut in half. If you chose to do that as well I have to tell you that it will look depending on your cutting straight technique and that’s why mine didn’t look all that peachy.
When your elastic or some kind of other string is ready you can set it aside. Now it’s time to get the beads going. Cut the paper in the two shapes as shown on a picture below.
Make sure you cut multiple paper strings of those two shapes – that depend on how big you want your necklace to be. You can also try both first and then see which one you prefer and cut more of those.
So now it’s the time to make beads. Take the pencil and one of the strings. Put the paper around the pencil as shown below.
Here you have 2 choices: you either glue the whole string or leave some space at one end unglued. This could choose whether your pencil will be full of glue and eventually sticky or not. I tried both and glue ended on pencil even though I didn’t glue the whole thing. I think you better just accept you will have to wash the pencil at the end, or the sticky part will ruin your fun.
When the string is glued you turn the pencil and roll paper on it. Now if you used liquid glue the paper might break if you pull it too hard. You might wanna use glue in a stick for better results. If your pencil is getting sticky take a break and wash it. If you leave it sticky it will only stick the whole bead to it and you might break it while pulling it down. Now let’s see what is the different between shapes of strings:
That’s what you get. Every time you are done with the paper beads, simply pull it down gently and put it aside to dry. You might wanna put it on piece of paper because chances are, it’s sticky.
Now make as many as you need. When you are done let them dry completely. This might take a while so you can use it to wash you sticky pencil and your hands and clean whatever you need. If you are crafting with your kid or if you’re simply not very crafty (like me) glue can be a nightmare. Especially if you use liquid glue (again: use the one in the stick!). Make sure you put some newspaper on your desk to protect it from the glue. While you are making beads they can get soaked in glue which will almost surely end up in your arms.
When paper beads dry you can put them on string. If you don’t prefer the way they look you can first color them with your favorite color. Once beads are on the string simply tie a knot. And that’s it. I hope you (and your kids) are enjoying your new necklace(s)!
